- Hovering stability
- Maneuverability
In short, a drone would like to be insensitive to ‘disturbance’ (the change of wind direction and direction of travel).
Therefore, symmetrical bluff body is not so stupid even from aerodynamic point of view.
Of course, there are many factors to be considered from aerodynamics point of view such as clearing the wake of rotators for propeller efficiency.
But, first of all, could you have a quick look on how your DIY drone is symmetrical? Your test flight under no wind could identify this type of issue.
